Rather surprisingly, when the Gloster Gladiator made its first flight in 1934, the Hawker Hurricane was barely a year away from making its own maiden flight, and the Spitfire was already on the drawing board. Clearly, the Gladiator was nearly obsolete when it first took to the skies, but despite this, it managed to distinguish itself in the early years of WWII, and gave birth to many ace pilots in theaters around the world. The plane in this painting is that of John Maxwell Watson seen during "Operation Exporter," the British move into Vichy French Syria and Lebanon in June 1941. Maxwell and his squadron mates faired reasonably well against monoplane Dewoitine D.520s during this campaign.
